Heorhiy Narbut

1886 – 1920

Heorhiy Narbut is an outstanding Ukrainian graphic artist, illustrator, and one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts. Narbut is called the "designer of the Ukrainian state" because he is the author of the design of the first Ukrainian banknotes, postage stamps, and the design for the coat of arms and the seal of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR). He also created the famous "Abetka" (Alphabet) and a unique typeface, the true popularity of which in Ukraine became possible only now, a century after their creation.

Narbut developed a national style in which he masterfully combined Art Nouveau with the decorativeness of Cossack Baroque. To achieve this, the artist, being a descendant of an ancient Cossack officer family himself, meticulously studied historical Ukrainian painting, heraldry, manuscript graphics, and early printed books.

The artist intended to illustrate Kotlyarevsky's "Aeneid," but unfortunately, he managed to create only one, yet masterfully executed, illustration — "Aeneas and His Army." Heorhiy Narbut died at the age of 34 from an illness, and his name and legacy were subjected to oblivion during the Soviet era. Despite his short life, he left behind a powerful artistic legacy, the influence of which is only gaining momentum today.
